Two new bridges in 2017
In 2013–14, the County rebuilt 13 km of corridor with geotextile and NeoWeb. In 2017, two pedestrian bridges were installed in the Tawatinaw corridor. Staging areas were developed at Rochester, Perryvale, and Colinton, with signage, maps, and picnic areas.
Athabasca to Colinton Trail
The 13 km Athabasca to Colinton trail was built along an undeveloped road allowance in 2013-14. This project involved the innovative use of geotextile and NeoWeb products to address areas of wet and boggy terrain. These products were developed for use in the oil and gas industry but are also extremely useful in addressing challenging trail conditions.
Athabasca County received funding from Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation and from Trans Canada Trail to develop the trail. Volunteers from the Athabasca Recreational Trails Association and Western Canadian Wagon Train led the project. A new bridge and several culverts were included in the installation.
Tawatinaw to Rochester:
This stretch of trail is 10 km long and has not yet been completed. However, three projects along this trail section were built in 2010 and include:
Rochester: a staging area that includes picnic tables, benches, waste receptacles, washroom and a covered kiosk with signage was built. Funding for materials and equipment was raised by the Athabasca Recreational Trails Association (ARTA). The work was done by volunteers from ARTA and the Rochester Agricultural Society
Colinton: A picnic shelter was constructed in Colinton with funding raised by the Athabasca Recreational Trails Association (ARTA). The work was done by volunteers from ARTA and the Colinton Playground Committee.
Perryvale: a local artist was commissioned to refurbish two community signs Funding for these amenities came from Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation.
