Sturgeon County

The Lamoureux staging area, one mile north of the hamlet of Lamoureux, was completed in 2016 and includes parking, a picnic table and garbage can, and an interpretive feature describing the history of the Athabasca Landing Trail. Two new trails are being built in 2017. The first is an asphalt trail along Highway 15 that connects Lamoureux to the staging area. This trail connects to the county’s river walk, which passes by the historic Lamoureux Church. The second trail is the 2.5 km Fort Augustus Trail north of the staging area on the east side of the highway. An official opening of these trails and the staging area will take place on August 26, 2017.

Sturgeon County provided the site and received grant funding from Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation to develop the staging area. This staging area anchors existing interpretive features and information contained on a series of rock cairns constructed along this historic section of road (part of the Victoria Trail and the Athabasca Landing Trail).
